Arts are integral to the PYP. They are a powerful mode of communication through which students explore and construct a sense of self and develop an understanding of the world around them.

The arts play a prominent role at Footscray Primary School from Foundation to Grade 6.

The Primary Years Program (PYP) views the arts as a form of expression intrinsic to all cultures, a powerful means to assist in the development of the whole child and important for interpreting and understanding the world. Our arts curriculum at this level focuses on music, dance and visual art.

The visual art program aims to develop students’ aesthetic, creative, imaginative and critical faculties. We believe art is a major language of childhood and an important way for children to learn about their world and communicate their thoughts and ideas. The goal of the art program is to empower children with different art materials, processes, skills and tools to promote their confidence and personal expression. Opportunities facilitate in-depth exploration of materials, along with motivating discussions that support children to think and feel deeply about their own experiences.

In preparation for the annual concert the students participate in a 10-week dance program with an artist in resident.

The arts exhibition and annual concert are important events in our school calendar where the arts are celebrated. The arts are a human right and should be a part of education today.
